Manufacturing project for Red Arrows launches

A new programme initiated by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and listed in its 2026 Defence Investment Plan will work to produce a new Jet Training System.

Once designed and manufactured, the equipment will work in modernised training aircraft set to replace the Hawk T1, which will leave service in 2030.

An advanced training aircraft in its time, the Hawk T1 entered service for the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1976 and has famously been flown by the RAF’s aerobatics team since 1979. According to the MOD notice, the investment will provide new jets for an up-to-date fast jet training system, enabling the Red Arrows with a replacement for the ageing Hawks and support the air force’s transition to the latest generation air systems.

Custom made die springs are employed in jet aircraft fabrication and serve as key components in multiple aircraft mechanisms. High-force compression springs crafted from square or rectangular wire, die springs see heavy use in forming presses, metal stamping and die-casting machinery needed to manufacture precise engine and airframe sheet-metal components.

Beyond adoption on the factory floor, the ability of die springs to withstand heavy loads and high stress in compact spaces also means they are directly integrated into specialised aircraft systems, like specific engine assemblies, brakes, clutches and landing gear mechanisms.

The MOD has now opened market engagement for the programme. Suppliers interested in participating are requested to submit company details, provide a point of contact and express their area of interest to the project team before the deadline of September 11.
