German defence contractor produces components for UK weaponry

German manufacturer, Rheinmetall, recently launched production of weapon systems for use in a future artillery fleet planned for the British Army. 

Critical components are now being manufactured at Rheinmetall’s Telford facility that will be installed in the artillery systems of the RCH 155’s self-propelled wheeled howitzers.

These components include gun barrels, recoil mechanisms and breech assemblies, with parts crafted from steel from Sheffield.

Disc springs and Bellville washers are industry-standard internal components and mechanical fasteners used in the subassemblies of artillery systems and military equipment like the RCH 155. Springs are important parts of breech operations, firing mechanisms and counterbalance assemblies, as they can cope with high pressures and rapid mechanical cycling.

Washers secure bolts, protecting them against intense shocks and vibrations incurred when mobile weaponry is operating or in transit.

The new initiative is part of the UK’s continuing efforts to rebuild the capabilities of its long-range artillery, and is one of the nation’s largest modernisation programmes to date. 

Rheinmetall’s confirmation that it has now started delivering the first weapon assemblies for the future fleet of self-propelled weaponry is a key milestone and signals the transition from initial contract award to production and industrial execution.

Rheinmetall is working in collaboration with British engineer, KNDS UK, on the project. The Stockport company manufactures Boxer vehicle modules, which will be integrated into the completed weaponry. 

Unlike standard self-propelled howitzers, the RCH 155 system is engineered to conduct missions with little crew intervention required.
