Supply chain report to urge UK operators to optimise efforts

A recently published document titled the UK Supply Report has outlined a range of practical advice for government, strategic suppliers, public operators, SMEs and major buyers. 

Recommendations include strengthening strategic processes and procurement further, enhancing supplier visibility and making better use of the UK’s existing capability to support resilience planning for crucial supply chains.

Major buyers and Critical National Infrastructure operators are now actively reviewing supply chain and procurement strategies, as resilience has become an increasingly important strategic and commercial priority.

Supply chain resilience requires moving from a "just-in-time" approach to a "just-in-case" model that can cope regardless of global disruptions. 

Here in the UK, specialist component suppliers support this strategy through enabling localised sourcing, cutting order lead times, and collaborating with companies on early designs to prevent obsolescence. 

UK engineering and manufacturing sectors increasingly depend on niche component providers to help de-risk operations. Suppliers bring expertise to collaborations with “design for manufacture” services in the product development phase. This can identify hard-to-source parts early and supply high-quality alternatives, like custom-made manufacturing or engineering springs, so that final products are easier to adapt should crises occur.

The CEO of Made in Britain, John Pearce, commented that the British manufacturing industry does not lack capability and that the UK has thousands of enterprises already producing world-class products for energy, transport healthcare, defence, transport and many other sectors. He stated that the question was now whether the UK was making the most of British industry and what it can offer.
