R&D facility opens to support UK aerospace manufacturers
A new state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) centre has launched in South Yorkshire with the aim of supplying the UK’s aerospace manufacturers with next-generation capabilities.
These include advanced materials that can make aircraft lighter and accelerate production times.
Called the “Composites at Speed and Scale” (COMPASS) facility, the operation has already secured global aviation leader Boeing as a user.
A national asset, the site will provide operations on all different scales with access to the cutting-edge research infrastructure required to make parts from composite materials. This capability is expected to transform manufacturing in several sectors beyond aerospace, like defence and renewable energy generation.
For aerospace, advanced materials will allow the production of lighter components, cutting emissions and boosting fuel efficiency. Although composites offer exceptional weight-to-strength ratios, metal components perform better when working under extreme compressive loads. They are also substantially simpler to recycle and repair when technical engineering support is required.
Heavy-duty compression springs and precision die springs are critical in aircraft manufacturing, especially for high-stress tooling processes like forming, blanking and metal stamping. Springs are also directly integrated into mechanical aircraft components such as clutches, valves, brakes and control systems where high-load capabilities are critical.
The new COMPASS innovation facility is valued at £54 million and is positioned in the centre of the South Yorkshire Investment Zone. The site marks a substantial step forward to expand the national economy and help secure the UK’s aerospace manufacturing industry’s long-term future by enhancing the rate and scale of production.
