Compression Springs
Compression springs are the most common type of springs. The majority of compression springs are cylindrical and linear, but to this group belongs also conical, barrel shaped, tapered out ends and more. The design can be adjusted to fulfil a wide range of requirements concerning spring characteristic. We provide both stock springs and bespoke springs.
Open-coil helical mechanical devices, compression springs are engineered to resist a squeezing or pushing force. They shorten under a load and store potential energy up until these forces are removed.
What are compression springs used for?
Compression springs see frequent use in a wide range of mechanical manufacturing operations. Everyday applications see them in power retraction mechanisms in ballpoint pens, support latching in door locks and distributing weight in mattresses. However, they also absorb vibrations and shocks in vehicle suspension and recoil in firearms.
Industrial equipment also requires dependable compression springs from heavy machinery used in offshore drilling rigs to caulking guns, wire strippers and other handheld tools.
How do I choose the right compression spring?
The best practice for picking the correct compression spring is to define the application’s load requirements and measure space limits. To define load and force, work out how much resistance or push you require at the target compressed length, and find out the maximum and minimum force that the compression spring must exert when operating.
When checking space limits, note the spring’s total length in an uncompressed state and its solid height. This is its total height when its coils are all touching. Make certain this is smaller than the space available.
Finally, check the inside and outside diameter of the spring to ensure it fits inside holes or clears rods.
Which compression spring material should I choose?
Low cost and high strength, tempered carbon steel is commonly selected for general indoor use where extreme temperatures or corrosion are not key concerns. However, more advanced applications require springs made from more durable materials.
Resistant to rust and corrosion, stainless steel is considered an optimal option for medical, marine and wet environments. However, chrome silicon is the best choice for dynamic cyclic, heavy-duty and high-stress applications.
