Global automation giant to manufacture turbine components in UK

Siemens Energy has announced it will now manufacture integral components for use in turbine systems for the Rolls-Royce SMR programme.

The new contract will see the international operator make selected parts in its production plant based in Newcastle, and is designed to strengthen the UK’s supply chain while retaining domestic nuclear manufacturing capabilities.

In the UK, responsive production of custom components like die and disc springs support engineering teams in improving lead times in the manufacturing sector. Sometimes referred to as conical spring washers or Belleville washers, disc springs are dependable and durable solutions that are widely used in steam turbine manufacturing for the power generation industry. Under high temperatures, they control component movement and maintain alignment, even under severe thermal expansion. They can also handle dynamic loads in confined spaces. They absorb mechanic shocks, maintain consistent preloads and dampen vibrations, making them a match for turbine braking systems, gear boxes and other applications.

Production at the CA Parsons Works plant in Newcastle will cover the three initial planned units for the Gwyndod project. These will include valve chests and steam turbine sections. A spokesperson for Rolls-Royce SMR stated that this is the first time such components have been made for a small-scale modular reactor based in Europe.

Providing a boost to the local as well as national economy, the participation of Siemens Energy's North East England plant is also anticipated to support over 550 jobs.

Rolls-Royce SMR appointed Siemens Energy to serves as its international partner for turbine systems in 2025, with the partnership covering design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning.
